If you fish for trout, you likely have at least half-a dozen spools of tippet constantly at the ready, just in case you need to add length to your leader, change the tippet strength to throw bigger flies to larger fish or to rebuild a diminishing leader. And, if you’re like me, you despise the typical “spool tenders” that work maybe the first time before failing and leaving you with a rat’s nest of tippet.
It’s one of the little things that fly-fishing engineering hasn’t caught up with yet.

Using household materials that are readily available, it’s possible to replace all the spool tenders in your fly fishing supply in an hour so and for just a few dollars in total. It may seem like a lot of work, but when you consider the effort you have to expend to rewrap a spool of 5x tippet on the water (effort that could be spent actually fishing), I think you’ll agree that it’s worth the time spent making these little tenders at home, especially if you’re a tippet monger like I am.
